Razer Blade 15 test and review

Product Output:
The design experiments of the manufacturer did not benefit the laptop. Although the device turned out to be extremely compact and thin, the flat keyboard during the game does not give any pleasure, and there are certain problems with cooling. In the area of performance, the Razer Blade 15 can flash, but still, you expect excellent performance from such a device.

Benefits
 superior gaming performance
 outstanding 144-hertz display
 long battery life

disadvantages

  •  the device becomes loud and hot
  •  bad gaming keyboard
  •  mediocre equipment
  • Compactness problems

Razer advertises its Razer Blade 15 under the motto “the most compact form of all gaming laptops.” And this is consistent with our estimates: in terms of length and width, another centimeter was saved, and in terms of height, the 15.6-inch device is slightly inferior except for Zephyrus models from Asus. Overall, however, the Razer Blade is the “king of compactness.”

However, thin design entails noticeable problems in ease of use. According to the results of our tests, the Razer Blade 15 received an unusually poor assessment for ergonomics: since there was not enough space for a full-fledged keyboard with a small construction height, it had a very small height of the key travel. In normal use, it is not so noticeable, but during gaming, it can interfere – you will simply feel badly pressing. This is especially true for the area of the WASD keys used for control.

There are other reasons for criticism: for example, the fact that the Razer Blade 15 is unpleasantly loud. At the same time, the level of working noise does not greatly exceed that of other gaming laptops, but the Razer Blade 15 makes a high-frequency sound, which actually gets on your nerves. A thin laptop, as it turned out, is very hot, and under full load, the heat can be felt even on the surface of the keys. The compact design has it’s cunning, even if it does not reduce performance.

There are no complaints about the performance

In terms of performance, on the contrary, the Razer Blade 15 is nothing to be ashamed of. This gaming notebook is equipped with an Intel Core i7-8750H processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics card. Among models with a similar hardware configuration, the Razer Blade 15 achieves the best level of performance and can only be surpassed by competitors with the GTX-1080 graphics chip. Here, Razer fully exerts its expertise – Blade is perfectly equipped for gaming.

In the PCMark- and 3DMark benchmarks, the Razer Blade 15 wins a good amount of points and comes close to higher-end models. Yes, and all our frames-per-second measurements gave, without exception, good results. During the reference tests “FarCry 5” with graphical settings at the level of “Ultra”, the Razer Blade 15 clearly stands out against the background of GTX-1070 competitors with its 78.0 fps. However, as we have already mentioned, despite the optimized Max-Q graphics card technology and Vapor-Chamber-cooling, the system is getting quite hot.

Screen: HD or UHD
In terms of display, Razer doesn’t give a reason for reproach: the Blade 15 is equipped with an excellent 144 Hz LC panel. Chess contrast (175: 1) and maximum brightness (280 cd / m2) is an excellent result, and the Standard-RGB color space is almost completely covered. The screen is framed with a frame only 4.9 mm thick, that is, it is almost frameless. In its standard version, the Razer Blade 15 has a resolution of Full HD. Along with this, the manufacturer also offers the Advanced version with Full HD, but already the 144 Hz version (there are UHD versions in other markets).

Equipment: what is missing?

Razer sells the Blade 15 in various configurations: the most affordable is equipped with a GTX 1060 graphics card and a 256-gigabyte SSD drive. The Profi version we tested has the GTX 1070 on board, and the SSD capacity is 512 GB. There is also a function here that allows each button on the keyboard to highlight with its own color, that is, to set up an individual RGB profile. Three USB Type-A interfaces and one Type-C with Thunderbolt 3 support are available for use. A mini-Displayport output is also available, as well as Bluetooth 5 and WLAN. For the network connector, however, there was simply not enough space in the thin case. Satisfactory results, but nothing special.

In the area of mobility, by contrast, Blade 15 almost sets a new record. The duration of battery life with continuous video playback is 7 hours and 12 minutes, and under a normal workload, this gaming laptop can last more than 5 hours. In addition, the Profi-version has a connector for quick battery charging. Since the weight of the device with its slightly over two kilograms is surprisingly low, the Razer Blade 15 can be used on the road without any problems.

Razer Blade 15: the high price for significant quirks

Razer Blade 15 in its most affordable version with a GTX 1060, 60 Hz display, and a small SSD drive is estimated at 135,000 rubles. There is an Advance option for 160,000 rubles. and higher. Thus, with a pure comparison with other models of performance, this gaming laptop is within a reasonable price. But, nevertheless, if we take into account all the above problems, they can be criticized.

We come to the conclusion for the reason that users who rely primarily on gaming performance should most likely take a slightly more expensive model with the GTX 1080. Yes, and if you are looking for the optimal combination of all the qualities, you will find more affordable at the price alternatives with approximately the same good performance as the Razer Blade 15. Ergonomic problems spoil the overall impression, and thus the Razer gaming machine is located only in the middle of our respective go rating.
